Dress shirts

The collar is where a suit succeeds or fails.

A jacket frames the shirt collar, and a collar that gaps, chokes or collapses undoes everything above it. Shirts here are drafted to your neck, jaw and posture — then ordered in fours once the pattern is proven.

How it works

One trial shirt, then fours.

The first shirt is a working prototype. It is cut, worn, washed and judged — because cotton only tells the truth after the first few launderings.

Collar height and point length are drawn for your neck and jaw, not picked from a card. Sleeves are cut to your actual arm with the cuff sitting where your watch is. Once the pattern is corrected, shirts are ordered in fours: the working rotation that keeps any one shirt from wearing out early.

Cloth runs from two-fold poplins and end-on-ends for the courtroom to airy zephyrs and linens for a Gulf summer. Everything is chosen with Florida laundering in mind — shirts here get washed twice as often as they would in Boston.

The particulars

Decisions made once, then kept.

Collar

Drawn for your jaw

Spread, semi-spread, cutaway or club — chosen against your face, with interlining soft or crisp as you prefer.

Cuff

Barrel or French

Cut to clear your watch on one wrist, sit clean on the other. Marcella and studs for evening shirts.

Body

Room where you need it

Full enough to sit through a deposition without pulling, trim enough to disappear under a jacket. Tails long enough to stay tucked.

Monogram

Or not

If wanted: small, tonal, at the left rib where only you know it’s there. Never on the cuff.
