Florida is a cloth problem. Solve it first.

Ninety-two degrees, ninety percent humidity, and a parking lot between every air-conditioned room. Most suits sold here are cut from cloth designed for London and fail on the sidewalk. The fix is not less suit — it's the right weave.

The principle

Airflow beats weight. Weave beats fiber.

The instinct is to ask for the lightest cloth on the card. The instinct is wrong, and it is why so many Florida suits look exhausted by ten a.m.

What cools you is air moving through the cloth, and that is a function of the weave, not the scale weight. A 250-gram high-twist worsted woven open will wear cooler than a 210-gram cloth woven tight — and it will hold a crease, resist wrinkling and drape properly, which ultra-light cloth cannot. Very light cloth is also fragile at the seat and knee, which matters when a suit is worn weekly.

So the working range here is 230 to 290 grams, in open weaves, from mills that weave specifically for hot climates.

High-twist worsted

Yarn twisted hard before weaving springs back instead of creasing, and the plain open weave moves air. The year-round Florida business cloth: courtroom-formal, car-proof, deposition-proof.

Basket weaves you can hold to the light and see through. The most breathable wool made, and the most durable cloth on this page. Slightly dry, matte texture — immaculate at ten feet.

Irish linen

The flax fiber sheds heat and moisture faster than any wool, and wrinkles as a matter of character. Cut half-lined with a soft shoulder for weddings, garden parties and everything outdoors from May to September.

What to avoid

The cloths that fail here.

Three things on most cloth cards are wrong for this climate, whatever the salesman says.

Closed 300-gram worsteds — the default suiting of the northern world. Beautiful cloth, wrong latitude: the tight weave traps heat and holds damp against the body.

Ultra-light “summer” cloths under 200 grams — sold as tropical, they wrinkle savagely, wear through at the seat, and are usually woven tight to survive their own flimsiness, which defeats the point.

Heavy polyester blends — the rental-warehouse standard. Plastic does not breathe at any weight, which is why rented formalwear feels the way it does in a Florida June.
